Arusha National Park

Discover Arusha National Park

Located just a short distance from Arusha, Arusha National Park is one of Tanzania’s most accessible and diverse protected areas. Though smaller in size compared to other parks in the northern circuit, it offers an extraordinary concentration of landscapes—from lush montane forests and open savannahs to shimmering lakes and volcanic craters.

Dominated by the majestic Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest peak, the park provides a unique combination of scenic beauty, wildlife encounters, and adventure activities. It is one of the few places in Tanzania where visitors can experience walking safaris and canoeing, creating a more intimate and immersive connection with nature.

Whether as a day trip or part of a longer itinerary, Arusha National Park delivers a rich and rewarding safari experience in a compact setting.

Arusha National Park covers approximately 552 square kilometers and lies within the northeastern part of Tanzania, near Kilimanjaro International Airport.

The park is composed of three main ecological zones:

  • The forested slopes of Mount Meru
  • The Ngurdoto Crater
  • The Momella Lakes

This ecological diversity supports a wide range of wildlife including giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, warthogs, and black-and-white colobus monkeys. Although large predators are less common, the park’s scenic landscapes and unique activities make it a standout destination.

Mount Meru

Mount Meru is the centerpiece of the park and one of Africa’s most գեղեցbeautiful volcanic mountains. Rising to 4,566 meters, it offers a challenging trekking experience with spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro on clear days.

The mountain is surrounded by fertile forests rich in wildlife and birdlife.

Ngurdoto Crater

Often referred to as the “Little Ngorongoro,” Ngurdoto Crater is a lush volcanic caldera with steep forested walls and a swampy floor. It is home to buffaloes, warthogs, baboons, and a variety of bird species.

The crater provides stunning viewpoints from the rim, making it ideal for photography.

Momella Lakes

The Momella Lakes are a series of shallow alkaline lakes that vary in color due to algae and mineral content. They attract a wide range of birdlife, including flamingos, pelicans, and herons.

These lakes are among the most picturesque features of the park.

Montane Forests

The dense forests surrounding Mount Meru are home to black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and numerous bird species. The rich vegetation creates a tranquil and immersive natural environment.

Tululusia Waterfall

Hidden within the forest, Tululusia Waterfall is a scenic attraction accessible via guided walks. The journey to the falls offers opportunities to explore the park’s flora and fauna up close.
