Manyara National Park

Visiting Lake Manyara National Park!

Lake Manyara National Park is a compact but diverse wildlife haven nestled at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment in northern Tanzania. Covering approximately 330 square kilometers, the park is named after the alkaline Lake Manyara, which stretches across two-thirds of its area and serves as a seasonal home to thousands of flamingos and other waterbirds. The park is renowned for its rich habitats, including dense groundwater forests, open grasslands, and acacia woodlands—each teeming with life. From elephants and hippos to blue monkeys and the park’s iconic tree-climbing lions, Lake Manyara offers a truly unique safari experience within a relatively small area. Its easy accessibility from Arusha makes it an ideal stop on the northern safari circuit.

Lake Manyara National Park spans roughly 330 square kilometers, situated in the Great Rift Valley, between the escarpment and the lake itself. The park’s landscape is a fascinating mix of diverse ecosystems, from the lush groundwater forests and acacia woodlands to open grasslands and wetlands.

At its heart lies Lake Manyara, a shallow, alkaline lake that covers a significant portion of the park and fluctuates in size with the seasons. This dynamic water body is renowned for attracting large flocks of flamingos and other waterfowl. Along the western edge, the Great Rift Valley escarpment rises dramatically, offering stunning views over the lake and surrounding areas.

The park’s altitude ranges from 960 meters at the lake to over 1,500 meters along the escarpment, creating a variety of habitats. The diverse landscapes are home to a wide range of wildlife, including the famous tree-climbing lions, large herds of elephants, and plenty of birds, making the park a wildlife photographer’s dream.

For a slower pace, enjoy a picnic near one of the scenic spots in the park. The tranquility of the surroundings and the chance to observe wildlife in their natural habitat make this a relaxing way to spend your time.

🌞 1. Start Early for Wildlife Sightings

The early morning is the best time to spot wildlife, particularly elephants and lions. It’s also cooler and offers the best lighting for photography.

👕 2. Dress Comfortably and Appropriately

Wear light, breathable clothing in neutral tones (avoid bright colors). If hiking, ensure you have sturdy shoes. Bring a jacket for cooler mornings and evenings, and don’t forget sunscreen and a hat!

🦟 3. Bring Insect Repellent

Like many Tanzanian parks, Lake Manyara has mosquitoes, especially in the more humid areas like the groundwater forests. Be sure to carry insect repellent to keep safe from bites.

📸 4. Be Ready for Photography

Whether you’re capturing the dramatic views from the escarpment or snapping photos of the iconic tree-climbing lions, don’t forget your camera with a zoom lens for wildlife shots. A pair of binoculars is also handy for birdwatching.

🧑‍✈️ 5. Go with a Guide

Hiring a professional guide for your game drives or walking safari enhances the experience by providing insider knowledge about the park’s wildlife, plants, and geology. Plus, they know the best spots for wildlife sightings.

🌍 6. Respect Local Communities

When visiting Maasai villages nearby or interacting with local communities, always ask for permission before taking photos and be respectful of their traditions and way of life.

💳 7. Park Entry Fees

Ensure you check current entry fees before your visit as they may vary based on nationality and the type of activity.

🌞 Dry Season (June to October)

  • This is the peak season for wildlife viewing. The weather is dry, and animals are drawn to water sources, making them easier to spot.
  • Lake Manyara shrinks, concentrating the flamingos and other waterbirds, providing fantastic photo opportunities.
  • The weather is warm and sunny, perfect for outdoor activities like hiking and game drives.

🌧️ Green Season (November to May)

  • Low season with fewer tourists, offering a more peaceful and intimate experience.
  • The landscape is lush and vibrant, and birdwatching is especially rewarding as migratory species fill the park.
  • The wet season can cause some areas to be muddy, and occasional rains may affect your safari plans, but it’s still a great time for photographers and those seeking fewer crowds.

Best of Both Worlds:

  • April and May see the highest rainfall and can make some parts of the park more challenging to visit, but they’re also the best months for birdwatching.
